Pinsent raises questions about Olympics in China

18Nov05

An incredible story has emerged from China, the host country of the 2008 Olympic Games, in a report by four-times Olympic gold-medallist Matthew Pinsent.? Pinsent claims to have seen children being abused during training camps in readiness for the hosting of the Olympic Games.? These are pretty serious allegations coming from a very high-profile athlete within the Olympic movement.

Pinsent, who described children in pain while training and claimed a boy had been beaten by his coach, said: “It was a pretty disturbing experience.”

We await an official response from either the IOC or the Organising Committee of the 2008 Games.? Clearly there is a problem here and I sincerely hope it will not be swept under the carpet.

  1. I was disturbed when I first read this story, but then realised it was one individual’s personal perspective. Do parents and coaches `cross the line` in seeking out the next world champion? I’m sure many do. Is it an issue confined only to China? – absolutely not. As I write, there are probably millions of parents `hatching` some master plan to turn little Jonny or Kate into the next Tiger Woods or Venus Williams. Sometimes though, I wonder who wants it more – the child or the parent

  2. I think you have a point, but in this case it is not the parents who are pushing their children, this is a state-run operation to produce gold-medal winning athlets by 2008. Think back to what was East Germany and the cases which are now coming to light resulting in former athletes suing drug companies.
