Women’s boxing in London
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has decided against including women’s boxing at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China. But IOC director of sport Kelly Fairweather insists the sport could still make its debut in London in 2012.
The IOC have moved in the right direction to try to increase the number of female participants in the Olympics by increasing the number of teams in sports such as football, handball and hockey.
The IOC’s Director of Sport’s comments that “the sport could still make its debut in London in 2012” somewhat goes against the British Boxing Board of Control’s reluctance to licence women boxers in the UK who were extremely reluctant to licence women boxers some years ago.
